Patrick Tagoe-Turkson was born in the Effutu State of Winneba, Ghana on the 24th of June, 1978. His works are inspired by his historical traditional Effutu Asafo (traditional socio-politico military institution of the Effutu State of Winneba).flag art concepts. Being an Asafo himself, his quest for a personal voice as an artist over the years has drawn him to fuse ideas from his native flag art culture with other contemporary visual expressions. As a new form of visual communication, he creates constellations of drawings, paintings, performance and sculpture using fabric and found objects within specific environments. He believes that the environment has enough resource for the artist to express anything he want to say to society and that people will appreciate and understand art better when art is made to reflect ideas found within their own societies. This uncompromising approach to his art gives him the chance to stay loose in his expression to speak to a vast and complex audience, addressing issues of contemporary social concerns in public spaces. He has held numerous solo exhibitions since 1999 including his recent “Lontoba” series in Ghana, which has been running for the past three years. He is a member of the SaNsA International Artist Group, Ghana, African Community of Art Educators, and the Professional Painters Association of Ghana.

Patrick has been teaching young children art since 1997. His background includes a BFA (Painting) and an MFA (Painting) form the College of Art, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. Currently, he is an artist-teacher at Takoradi Polytechnic, Takoradi, Ghana.



Artist Statement
“Most art expressions that have no spiritual base can be said to be transient to some extent. It is mostly those that are deep and touch the life and soul of its audience that will endure”

You see, as water boils and shortly becomes cold, some people look at art and soon forget about what the work has to articulate, but I believe that as one is exposed to the socio-politico-economic concerns of our world today, using materials found in one’s own society, one’s psychological sensitivity with art grows. So do I want to at all time influence the soul of my viewers by joining them in deducing meanings that make sense to them in their own way.
